Staff Meeting
There will be a Staff Meeting on Tuesday at 2:50-3:30pm in the library. There are a few things we should discuss before the end of the school year.
All Staff
- a year end job list has been posted in the staff room. Please sign up to help with one of these jobs.
- clean out personal items from the fridge BEFORE Friday.
- damaged furniture, desks, tables, etc. may be stored on the gym stage after Monday afternoon
- unused furniture in good condition may be stored in Natalia's room once she has moved out
Teachers
- all student files must be completed this week (please see the PSR handout)
- return all emergency preparedness clip boards to the office (keep the first aid kit)
EAs
- if you are owed any banked time, please confirm with Carrie or Tia. All banked time must be cleared this school year, it cannot be carried over to next year.
- clean out the personal locker you may have used this year. Remove all combination or keyed locks so the custodial staff can clean the lockers.
Custodial Requests
- ensure students take home all personal belongings
- clean out all desks, remove name tags, number lines, alphabet lists or any other item taped on the top
- take down all bulletin boards, clean off table tops, teacher's desk or other surfaces needing cleaning
- use soap and water to wash out the juice recycling container (do not just rinse it out)
- bag and tie all paper recycling
- stack student desks in the middle of the room, as all tiled floors will be waxed first
- remove all food from classrooms
- take any unclaimed clothing items to the lost and found
- the school will be open from 8:30 - 3:00 during most of the summer. Please be aware that our custodial staff begins the summer clean up with floor waxing so you may have to enter the school other than through the front doors.
Office Requests
- you must complete a form if you wish to use any school equipment (camera, laptop, ipad, etc.) over the summer
- if you are not returning to Bear Creek in September, return your keys to Pat
- send an electronic copy of your report cards to Pat
Book Room
Please return all books to the book room as soon as possible. Please return them in the appropriate places. We will be revisiting and reviewing the sign out procedure in the fall. This will help our new staff joining us.
Lost and Found Items
All the Lost and Found items will be laid out early this week. Please walk your students by the Lost and Found Items so they can check if any of their items are among those lost and/or found. :-)
Staff Talent
There is a brief Staff Talent Show practise in the gym at Recess on Monday. Remember to wear your black bottoms and neon tops!

Internal Transfers:
June and Linda have internally transferred into the Gr. 3 position for next year. Congratulations to them!
Now, there is a Gr. 6/7, as well as the Gr. 2/3 available for internal transfer if anyone is interested. Please let Carrie or Tia know asap as they will be posted in Round 3.
Intermediate Prep. for 2013/2014
The Gr. 5, 6 and 7 teachers need to decide what subject area they would like as prep. next year. Is it French, PE or both? Or other? Please let us know your preference. The Gr. 4/5 class receives music as prep.

Intermediate Prep. – 0.45
LIF Funding:
Bear Creek received 0.400 LIF teacher for next year. Since our plans for another divisional teacher will not materialize, it is probably best to add this to LST or another teaching assignment to support vulnerable students. Here is the plan so far:
LST = 5.5 (Judy, Alice, Ida, Cindy and Jessica) The other 0.5 is Tia. Since Tia’s VP assignment is 0.800 we wanted to add a 0.3 LIF to her teaching assignment so it totals 0.80. We had discussed using this portion of LIF LST for assistive technology support directly in the classroom with students, EAs and classroom teachers. What do you think? This still leaves us with 0.1 LIF remaining. Any ideas?
LST Collaboration Meetings
Teachers are asked to bring their pinks and blues and a class list. Please be prepared to discuss each student and your recommendations for support for next year. We are hoping to offer the following programs: Aboriginal Laptop (new name - TELAL - Technology Enhanced Learning for Aboriginal Learners); Reading Support; Do The Math; Fountas and Pinnell Intervention (very small targeted group of students).
*** If you feel one of your students would benefit from assistive technology, please consider what technology would be most useful for him/her. For instance, would it be helpful for him/her to have access to a laptop, an ipad, an ipod, etc... This is particularly important for those we are considering for the TELAL Project - Technology Enhanced Learning for Aboriginal Learners as we have to put in a specific proposal for specific tech for our aboriginal learners. ***

Emergency Evacuation Plan

- be sure you have an updated class list, first aid kit and evacuation map located at the exit door of your classroom. A scheduled earthquake drill will be on Thursday, June 13. The time will not be announced.

A Parent's Wishes For His Child's Teachers
I love this TEDx Talk by West Vancouver Superintendent Chris Kennedy. Some of us in Surrey had the pleasure of seeing this talk (and others) live. Powerful talk by a parent first and superintendent second.

Now, there is a Gr. 6/7, as well as the Gr. 2/3 available for internal transfer if anyone is interested. Please let Carrie or Tia know asap as they will be posted in Round 3.
Intermediate Prep. for 2013/2014
The Gr. 5, 6 and 7 teachers need to decide what subject area they would like as prep. next year. Is it French, PE or both? Or other? Please let us know your preference. The Gr. 4/5 class receives music as prep.

LIF Funding:
Bear Creek received 0.400 LIF teacher for next year. Since our plans for another divisional teacher will not materialize, it is probably best to add this to LST or another teaching assignment to support vulnerable students. Here is the plan so far:
LST = 5.5 (Judy, Alice, Ida, Cindy and Jessica) The other 0.5 is Tia. Since Tia’s VP assignment is 0.800 we wanted to add a 0.3 LIF to her teaching assignment so it totals 0.80. We had discussed using this portion of LIF LST for assistive technology support directly in the classroom with students, EAs and classroom teachers. What do you think? This still leaves us with 0.1 LIF remaining. Any ideas?
LST Collaboration Meetings
Teachers are asked to bring their pinks and blues and a class list. Please be prepared to discuss each student and your recommendations for support for next year. We are hoping to offer the following programs: Aboriginal Laptop (new name - TELAL - Technology Enhanced Learning for Aboriginal Learners); Reading Support; Do The Math; Fountas and Pinnell Intervention (very small targeted group of students).
*** If you feel one of your students would benefit from assistive technology, please consider what technology would be most useful for him/her. For instance, would it be helpful for him/her to have access to a laptop, an ipad, an ipod, etc... This is particularly important for those we are considering for the TELAL Project - Technology Enhanced Learning for Aboriginal Learners as we have to put in a specific proposal for specific tech for our aboriginal learners. ***

- all staff practice will take place on Wednesday, June 12 after school from 2:45 - 3:15. EAs are to use all extra calendar minutes for the week from June 10 - 14, so they are present for the emergency practice on June 12.

LIF - May-June 2013
We have a 0.5 teacher starting on Tuesday. His name is Taylor Weakes. As we discussed on Friday at Recess for those who were able to attend, we will be making a schedule for Taylor, which will likely change week-by-week.
As discussed and recommended by staff, Taylor will be:
- Providing Guided Reading support for the Grade 1 students to allow it to continue until the end of the year.
- Assist in the reading assessments of the Grade 1 students - so that all Grade 1 students are assessed using the Fountas & Pinnell Assessment Kit by the end of the year.
- Provide additional support for the most at-risk learners in Grade 1 (sight word practise, book-bag practise, word families, etc...). This support will be provided 1-1 in small amounts of time (10-15 minutes each)
- Provide time for teachers to collaborate on the needs of their students - ie. special needs designated students, ELL learners, AIP collaboration
- Provide release time for teachers to observe one another
There will be a sign-up sheet by the sign in book, if you want to book any time for Taylor.
Crisis Response
Our Crisis-Response Team met on Friday afternoon with some members of our PAC to discuss our Crisis Response to the incident on Thursday morning. Overall, we all feel it went really well. We were able to generate a number of recommendations for our staff team, and for our PAC. We will review these with everyone at the next Staff Meeting. In addition, we wanted you to know that there is a plan to have a full-scale evacuation practise with student release to parents some time in June.
LIF 2013/2014
As we discussed, we received 0.4 LIF teacher position for next year. We will need to meet to discuss the best way to positively impact student learning with this additional support. If you have any ideas, please see Carrie or Tia.
RAD and SWW
Thank you to everyone who has completed the Data Collection Summary sheets and have given the class lists and summary sheets to Carrie and Tia. Also, the LST team appreciates you giving them the RAD booklets, summary sheets and the SWW writing sample with the performance rubric.
If you have not given these items to the appropriate people, please do so early this week. (If you are not sure who is supposed to get what, please see last week's staff memo for the detailed information).
EA Planning Tool Collaborative Meetings
Most people have signed up for a time to discuss the needs of your students with our team and Joanna Angelidis on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. You can check your times on the schedule that is beside the sign in book. Please do not remove this schedule.
The support team will include the classroom teacher, the EA, integration teacher or hearing teacher. The following key questions are provided to help guide the conversations / discussions. You may want to prepare some notes beforehand. This will speed up the process of the meeting.
1. What is/are the barrier/s to the learning environment or the learning
activity?
2. What are the interventions required to facilitate access? … to the learning
environment? … to the activity?
3. Who? How? What is the role of the EA?
4. What are the compensatory skills the student requires for increasing
independence or interdependence?
5. Who? How? What is the role of the EA?
Here is a sheet you may want to use to jot down some notes in advance (click on the underlined words). Carrie sent this sheet out earlier in the week to you all. You may need more than one sheet (one sheet per higher-need student, depending on the needs of your identified, higher-needs students).

Spring Concert
Thank you all for your hard work and effort with our Spring Concert last week. It was truly an amazing time for our students and our families. We students were wonderful and were clearly very well-prepared. The families loved seeing their children on the stage.
RAD and SWW
You all have now completed the school-wide RAD and SWW. We ask that you do a few things now (if you haven't already done so):
1) Please transfer the information to the class list that was provided (APP, MM, FM, EX) for Reading and Writing.
2) Please complete the Data collection summary sheets for SWW and RAD - that tallies up the number of boys/girls/aboriginal students who NY, APP, FM, EX the expectations. If you need help tallying, please let Tia or Carrie know and we will show you how the collection sheet works.
3) Please give all the RAD booklets and summary sheets and the SWW writing sample and performance standard rubric to your LST teacher by Wednesday. She need to copy things for the student files. The information will be returned to you when the copying is completed.

The vote is in! There will be Summer ProD. this summer - Wednesday, August 28. The in-lieu day will be Friday, November 8th.

Teachers will be given time this week to collaboratively mark the School-Wide writes that were completed last week. Primary - Thursday - 9am / Intermediate - Friday 9-am. When these are completed, please write the results on your class summary sheet and also please complete the data collection summary sheet. Give these two sheets to Carrie or Tia. Please give all RAD/SWW assessments to your LST teacher so she can make copies for the ELL/LST files.

As indicated on the information sheet that was given to you last week, please keep all RAD results until your class has finished the School Wide Write and you have participated in the collaborative marking for the SWW. At that time (once marking is completed), please give all your RAD sheets and SWW (with writing sample and rubric) to your LST teachers. These will be returned to you once your LST teacher has copied the necessary pages for the ELL students and other LST students. Please give the data collection sheets (RAD and SWW) and class lists to Carrie or Tia.

RAD This Week
Grades 4-7 - Please have your students complete the RAD by Friday. With consideration of our high absenteeism, you may want to start early to ensure that all students complete it by the end of the week. You will collaboratively mark the RAD's with your colleagues next week.
Grades 2 & 3 - Please ensure ALL your students complete the RAD by Thursday. You have each signed up for a time where there will be a TOC in your room. At that time, the entire LST team will be helping complete the running record and the post-conference on the back page. You will not be marking at this time. You will mark the RAD's collaboratively with your colleagues next week.
All LST teachers will be assisting with the RAD assessments on Thursday - other LST services will not occur for the day.
LIF Funding Consultations
There will be two after school meetings (one primary & one intermediate) this week for LIF Funding Consultations. During this time, we will be looking at the various needs of the students in the upcoming grades for next year. Please plan on attending these meetings.

BC Sports Hall of Fame Field Trip Opportunity
Our students have an opportunity to visit the BC Sports Hall of Fame at BC Place.
The 2-hour field trip would consist of a 1-hour tour with an emphasis on Aboriginal Sport Heritage and then 1-hour in the Participation zone (hockey shootout, climbing wall, soccer and other events.There is also a place there for everyone to eat a bag-lunch. The field trip would be free of charge (sponsored by Telus), but we need to find out how many classes are interested so we can negotiate buses and what not.
Please let Tia know if you are interested in taking your class on this field trip by Tuesday morning.

The ILD team has blocked out 1-3 blocks each throughout the week for the iPads . The remaining blocks of time can be used by anyone. You can sign up for laptop times by clicking on the link above.

Thefts in the District
Our district has had a number of thefts from schools in recent weeks.
As a result, it is very important to remember each of the following:
- Please keep all valuables locked up at the end of each day.
- Do not keep any money in your classroom - always give money that you collect to Pat at the end of each day.
- All projectors/laptops/iPads need to be locked up in their appropriate carts/cupboards. Please lock up all projectors in your cupboard at the end of the day (we know this is a pain, but it is important).
Staffing Information
In preparation for the year end staffing assignments and transfer rounds, Tia and I need to know your preferences for grade assignments next year. A hard copy preference form will be in your letter boxes on Monday. Please return it to Carrie by Friday, April 12. Keep in mind that final grade assignments are not determined until September, so your top 2 or 3 grade preferences will help us determine an optimal school organization. We will be sending you a couple of draft organizations. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

They are in the midst of completing their year-long project and need additional time to complete their project and gather as much information as possible (quantitative and qualitative). As a result, please see the information below about the sign-out of the equipment.

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to let you know that the baby has finally arrived! Dominique Hope Chan Kin was born on Tuesday, March 5th and weighed in at 9lbs 12oz and 21.5 inches in length.
We had a whirlwind 5 hour labour and everyone is home now and doing well. Sophie is really enjoying her new role as big sister. :)

Health and Safety - Tip of the Week
Do you know that everyone has a responsibility to un-derstand and follow the Workers’ Compensation Act and the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation, especially as it pertains to your work site and job.
- The employer’s responsibility is to provide for the safety of its employees.
- Employee’s responsibility is to work safely and not do anything that would put themselves or others at risk of injury.
Willful disregard of either of these can result in discipline as set out in the collective agreements, per-sonal contracts or Board of Education Policy. WorkSafeBC also has the ability to impose penalties on organizations and individual employees within an organization.
This is all in the cause of preventing serious injury, dis-ease or death.

Please have them fill out the form I attached to the initial email I sent to you all with their contact information, occupation, age they would like to read with, and whether they need a book or not. Please give those forms to Tia as soon as possible so that community members can be organized into a schedule.
Health and Safety - Tip of the Week
Do you know that everyone has a responsibility to un-derstand and follow the Workers’ Compensation Act and the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation, especially as it pertains to your work site and job.
- The employer’s responsibility is to provide for the safety of its employees.
- Employee’s responsibility is to work safely and not do anything that would put themselves or others at risk of injury.
Willful disregard of either of these can result in discipline as set out in the collective agreements, per-sonal contracts or Board of Education Policy. WorkSafeBC also has the ability to impose penalties on organizations and individual employees within an organization.
This is all in the cause of preventing serious injury, dis-ease or death.

- report card attendance labels and a covering letter will be in boxes on Monday
- please remember to return your interview schedule sheet to Kim
- Parents can begin phoning in for interviews on Monday morning, March 11.
School Painting - Please read carefully.
- painting will begin in the staff room this week. Although the staff room will still be accessible the painters and paint odor will not be ideal for having lunch, visiting, etc. Rm. 307 will be the temporary staff room this week.
- painting will be moving into the 300 wing beginning with the Kindergarten and Strong Start rooms. These programs / children will not be relocated. All other enrolling classes will including, Gord, Hugh and Kim. We will try and let you know the timeline as soon as possible but please be sure all materials are taken down and desks, bookshelves, tables, etc. are taken down or moved away from the walls.
- all banks of lockers will be removed (in sections) and taken to Facility Maintenance for cleaning and painting. (The type of paint used on metal lockers is stronger than wall paint.) These will be removed in sections beginning with the 6 lockers outside of the hearing room and those used by Kim's students. I will place signs on them so you know in advance. I realize this is an inconvenience, but while your class lockers are gone, please have your students store their personal belongings in their classroom. EAs who use lockers could share with each other or temporarily secure your personal belongings in your classroom.
Health and Safety - Tip of the Week
Stairs present both a slip and trip hazard and a working at heights hazard. Every year there are a number of reports of employees falling down a set of stairs or tripping and falling while going up stairs.
Following are some suggestions to avoid falling up or down stairs:
Hold the handrail with one hand at all times.
Take only one step at a time.
Avoid carrying anything that requires two hands (leaving no hand free to arrest a fall).
Avoid carrying anything that blocks the line of vision (leading to mis-steps, trips and falls).

I completed a survey with the parents on our Bear Creek Success Blog. They answered 2 questions: 1) Do you find the Success Blog Useful - 97% (38/39) said Yes. 2) Would you like to see the Success Blog Continue 100% (39/39) said Yes. I also asked if they had any suggestions. The suggestions and comments from parents are below.

She would love it if you would send her some photos or videos of things you are doing in your classes, as it is really difficult for her to get around to all the classes each week to take photos.

Report Cards
- Report Cards due to Carrie (ODD) and Tia (EVEN) on Monday, February 25.
- Attendance labels and new student covers and envelopes will be distributed on Monday, March 4. Attendance cut off is Feb. 28.
- Carrie will be preparing a covering letter to be included as it contains information about early dismissals
- Attendance letters for particular students will be prepared and distributed by March 4
Health & Safety Mtg. -Tuesday at 8:15 am in Carrie's office
Inline Skating - begins Monday and runs for the next two weeks. The regular PE schedule is used. The skates will be housed and locked in the girls change room, so the girls will need to use the washrooms to change. Tanya, the inline skate instructor, clarified the use of the disinfectant spray. Due to the strength of the spray, she asked us to spray only once at the end of the day, NOT after each class. If you have a student with head lice, please let her know. She can set aside a helmet or those students can bring their own helmet. Students also need to be wearing DRY SOCKS when using the skates. A box of extra dry socks is provided if needed.
Hot Lunch - no hot lunch on Tuesday.
Basketball Teams vs Teachers - please come out to join us. Spectators are welcome, but they need to bring a food bank item or 50 cents admission. All proceeds go toward the year end Gr. 7 activities.

- Wednesday: Girls vs Teachers (Boys attending Woodward Hill tourney in PM. Carrie will cover Laurie's class.)
- Friday: All Star Coed Team vs Teachers
Recognition Assembly on Thursday - inline skating schedule has been adjusted already.

- There will be two early dismissal days (1:30) next week - Tuesday/Wednesday.
- Please let Kim know of your availability for parent-teacher interviews.
LRS Funds
If your grade group has not purchased items for your LRS funds ($362 / grade group), please submit your orders to Tia before Thursday, March 14th.
At this point, we may be a little over budget this year because we just took advantage of a couple of cost-shares opportunities that the district just offered. These included non-fiction Guided Reading books for the Grade 2/3 level (Sample titles included in this offer:•Sharing Our World: Animals of the Native Northwest Coast (Garfinkel Publications) •Literacy Place (Scholastic) • Windows on Literacy (National Geographic) and current Novels for Literature Circles for the Grade 3/4 level (Sample titles included in this offer: •Marty McGuire Digs Worms • How to Save Your Tail • Future Knight • Hamster Magic • Hockey Rules • 8 Class Pets + 1 Squirrel + 1 Dog = Chaos . These books will be stored in the Book Room to be used by everyone.
With this cost-share in mind, if you do not have anything specific you would like to purchase, we could use your grade group funds toward this order (so we do not go over-budget).

If you ever have something you would like add (or have your students add), please talk with or email Tia. She would love it if you would send me some photos or videos of things you are doing in your classes, as it is really difficult for me to get around to all the classes each week to take photos.

Missing Laptops
Currently we are missing some laptops. Some of you may have taken them to bring them home to work on report cards, which is fine, but please remember to sign them out with Pat if you do this. Also, please bring them back before school each day and put them in the laptop cart. It is really difficult for teachers who are using the laptop carts to use them when there are so few laptops and then some of them aren't returned. Thanks for your understanding.
We are also missing the laptop that belongs to the iPad syncing cart. There is a white laptop that belongs in the cart that has the special apple ID when you log in to iTunes.
Please return any laptops you have (besides the very old ones from Tia's LST room) to Tam's room on Monday morning (preferably by 8:15am). Thank you.
iPad Cart
There are a number of things that I would like to mention about the iPads:
- ensure they each take the same iPad out of the cart (there should be a class list with assigned numbers kept in the binder which is kept on top of the laptop)
- please ask that all students not change the front screen on the iPads. The front screen has the number of the iPad on it and it should remain that way for ease of use - these are being changed regularly.
- please do not put any additional apps on the iPads (or ask your students not to) as some iPads do have apps which have not been put on by the school and should not be on the iPads.
- please ask that your students leave the apps in the particular folders. The folders are there for ease of use for the primary students. We ask that the apps remain in the folders. There are some iPads where the apps are all mixed up in various folders. This will take a long time to fix.
- please ask that your students delete any work they are finished with once they do not need it any longer. Tia tried to update all the iPads to the new operating system, but some did not work and I suspect that it may have been because there are too many things on the iPad.
- If you are not going to use your block of time on the iPads, please write a note by the sign in book or send an email out to the staff - a couple of days in advance would be appreciated.
- Tia will be coming around to the classes using the iPads to talk about the use of the iPads this week.

- LST comments for classes are due on Monday. LST teachers are also asked to provide Carrie and Tia a copy of the comments
- French, Music, Band and platooning marks or checks are due this week.
- Attendance labels for the covers will be distributed on Monday, March 4. Attendance cut off is Feb. 28.
- If you have new students, please see Kim for report card covers and envelopes.
- Carrie will be preparing a covering letter to be included as it contains information about early dismissals
- Attendance letters for particular students will be prepared and distributed by March 4
FSA Assessments
- All gr. 4 & 7 assessments need to be in Tia’s office by Thursday in preparation for district up on Friday.
- Please bring them to Tia whenever you are finished (before Thursday, if finished earlier).
Gym Closed
- All day on Tuesday, Feb. 19 for Class / Team Photos
- PM only on Wednesday, Feb. 20 as we are hosting the Boys’ basketball playday

Gr. 7 Dinner Theatre - 6:30 - 8:00 pm
- set up will be right after school. Tables, chairs, AV and band will be set up in preparation for the event. If you are planning to attend, please arrive any time between 6:00 - 6:30 pm. Dinner is from 6:30 - 7:00 ish. The show starts at 7:15 if not earlier. An agenda will be available for the audience.
Red Sky Performance - Raven Steals the Sun
- this is the one I booked although we will need to check with Pat as there was some discussion about it during confirmation at the beginning of the year. The Great Mountain was the theatre performance last year, so I hope this is not the one coming on Friday.
Community Garden Committee Mtg. - Friday morning at 8:00 am - in Monica's room.
Health & Safety Committee Training - Wed. Feb. 13. Brenda, Tamara and Carrie attend all day from 8:30 - 3:00 pm at DEC.

iPad Schedule for Term 2
It has been noticed that the iPads are not being used some of the time this term. If you have time on the schedule that you are not planning to use, please send the staff an email and/or put a note by the sign in book (a few days in advance would be best). There are many others who would like to use the iPads with their students, even if it is only once in awhile.
The Term 2 schedule has been sent to the team 2-3 times and is posted in the office. Here is another copy of the schedule. For those who still have yellow and red spaces, please let Tia know when you have these times figured out, so these spots can be changed. Thanks. Click on the slideshare below to see it in a larger format (this can also be downloaded from this website as well). When this schedule is finalized (all green) it will be put in our Virtual Staffroom in the schedules folder.
Mardi Gras
The Mardi Gras luncheon is on Tuesday (thanks, Laurie). If you signed up to bring items, please remember to bring them on Tuesday (after the long weekend). :-)
Computer Lab
The computer lab will be closed on Thursday for Grade 4 & 7 teachers to finish off the computer component of the FSA. Sorry for any inconvenience. If the teachers do no need the entire day on Thursday, we will let everyone know.
Health and Safety - Tip of the Week
As you are moving things out of your classroom to have your classroom painted, please remember Proper Lifting Technique. If your students are moving their desks, please remind them of this lifting technique as well.

There will be a meeting on Wednesday at lunch for all teachers who have signed up to take the iPads out for Term 2. We will be starting the meeting at 11:45am in the Library (so that kindergarten teachers can also attend some of the meeting). This will be an opportunity to review procedures and sign out information.

iPad Schedule for Term 2
It has been noticed that the iPads are not being used some of the time this term. If you have time on the schedule that you are not planning to use, please send the staff an email and/or put a note by the sign in book (a few days in advance would be best). There are many others who would like to use the iPads with their students, even if it is only once in awhile.
